[see stages]

Type: public space Scope: biennale proposal Location: Bat-Yam North Shore Client: Bat-Yam international biennale of landscape urbanism Collaborator: atelier le balto Team: Stefan Werrer, Veronique Faucheur, Marc Pouzol, Gregoire Tourne, Holger Lindmüller Period: August 2009 Status: finished

[see stages] transforms the bank of the cliff into a social place to be, to see and to be seen. The [see stages] are establishing a link between the residential buildings and the beach. The [see stages]have both aspects of a garden and of a stage:
- Different plants which need or like salted sole will be cultivated; a pump can be installed in order to bring the water to the plants.
- The plantation will alternate with larger surfaces which can be used as stages by musicians, dancers, actors, etc. A pump can be installed in order to bring the water to the people (fountains, showers). The main actors of the [see stages] will be the water and the shade.

The construction-elements of the [see stages] will be made out of wood or other cheap material available.

The [see stages] will be in a number of three or more along the all bank. The number will depend on the capacity of the builders and on the financial possibilities. But at least three of them should be realised in order to make the idea understandable. Not all the bank should be occupied but only regularly placed areas.

On the areas in between the [see stages], the spontaneous vegetation will continue to grow; some help can be done (fertilizer).

The [see stages] are transforming the bank and the beach of the North Shore from a barrier into usable and shareable steps, ranks, grandstands an stages thus creating a urban scene for the people, for the view, for the water and for a new perspective on Bat-Yam.

The competition "student housing for the ETH Science City" was challenging participants to design a habitat for the international young researchers. Our project is situated at the edge of the Science City and thus forming a visual link between the city and the campus at Hönggerberg. With its iconic design it represents the ETH's ambition in the global competition of science cities

Derived from a standard perimeter block a sculptural volume is shaped by rotating and folding, resulting in an hybrid that continues the urban texture but also marks the entrance to the campus.

With its sculptural appearance and its height, Hochstapler has the potential to develop a strong new identity for the ETH.

Hochstapler offers a fantastic panoramic view of the entire city of Zurich and its lake. A garden in the courtyard forms the center for activities in summer. Common spaces and rooms are oriented towards this space

Hochstapler is literally a stack of wood. With its 10 storeys it is technically a highrise building and thus a prototyp for new innovative prefab wood strucutres that show the potential of this material

Park der Konturen

Type: conversion of a military area Scope: Competition Entry Location: Lingen an der Ems/D Client: Municipality Lingen Collaborator: metris architekten, Stötzer Neher Landschaftsarchitekten Team: Stefan Werrer, Thorsten Erl, Andreas Bartels, Silke Lindemann Consultant: Dr. Heide Schuster, wsgreentechnologies program: 12ha housing areas + 18ha landscape park Size: 30 ha Period: Feb - Jun 2008 Status: finished

Park der Konturen is a statement for an integrated urban and lanscape strategy. A new green loop connects the new Emsauenpark Reuschberge and the different housing areas. Orientation and Identification is provided by the significant design for this route. A strong and unique combination of urban and landscape elements with the new park at its center.

The Reuschberge neighbourhood is given more contour that stimulates activities and interest creates new events in public space and strengthens the outlines of the city.

low maintainenance meadows offer places for recreation and communication in a ntural environment. Here all generations can find areas to relax and play in different programatic areas. The high degree of freedom within the natural park asks for occupation.

The park is surrounded by four very specific housing areas that exploit the potential of the context. Thereby the overall urban structure remains fexible yet robust enough to adapt to future changes in program and parameters.

grünkern Babenhausen

Type: Urban Planning Strategy Scope: Competition Entry Location: Babenhausen/D Client: Europan 9 / Municipality Babenhausen Collaborator: metris architekten Team: Stefan Werrer, Thorsten Erl, Andreas Bartels Size: 70 ha Period: since Jun 2007 Status: Winner 1st prize, ongoing

grünkern is the heart of the southern urban area of Babenhausen. Three new quarters are oriented towards this leisure landscape with low-maintenance yet intensive use. The quarters are seen as opportunity areas. Design interventions aim at stimulating market driven development.

Primary measures include re-allotment as precondition for privatization as well as enhancement of public spaces for successful marketing.

grünkern is a designed open space situated in the middle of opportunity areas waiting to be occupied. The respective edges are formed by new housing typologies derived from the unique character of each quarter. The historic barracks are foreseen as a mixed-use area. By transforming the former parade ground into a market place, a new centre for this quarter is created. The residential area is an opportunity area for homeownership. Its southern part is designated to aviators who may park their little aircrafts right in front of their homes. The technical area will be transformed into a field for innovation attracting green industry startups.

The strategy of urban inversion is based on two radical premises: rigorous demolition of all existing structures within the limits of the future open space and therefore a complete unsealing of the surfaces on one hand, and maximum preservation of existing structures outside the perimeter with options for re-use, modernization or retrofitting on the other.

Thus, the strategy of urban inversion creates new public spaces with high spatial qualities to live and linger.

convertible house #1

Type: Experimental Housing Scope: Competition Entry, Project Development Location: Almere/NL Client: Municipality Almere Collaborator: MBA/S Team: Stefan Werrer, Matthias Bauer Consultant: Switbert Greiner, greinerengineering Size: 50 sqm Cost: EUR 120.000 Period: since May 2006 Status: Winner, Fonds BKVB Prize, ongoing

The competition "Simplicity" was initiated in 2006 by Comité de Fantasie and organized in association with CASla within the tradition of experimental housing areas in Almere which has resulted in the widely acclaimed locations De Fantasie and De Realiteit in Almere.

Situated in a unique location on a clearing in the woods the 12 chosen designs will form a new sustainable neighbourhood for individual housing desires and imagination.

With freedom from welfare supervision and only few commitments towards building regulations Simplicity aims to show the potentials of private initiatives on the housing market.

convertible house #1 is an adaptable housing unit. It is an experiment aiming at a simple yet flexible solution for the complexity of contemporary housing.

The constantly changing intensity of use in relation to season, weather and number of inhabitants and guests is facilitated by the variability of the inhabitable volume.

This variability is the result of the combination of a fixed and a mobile volume on rails. The fixed volume contains all necessary functions and installations whereas the mobile volume offers flexible space for circulation and living.. Kitchen, bathroom, heating, walking closet and beds are integrated into specially shaped cocoons.

There are 2 different radical modes with each its own delicate relation between inside and outside: the convertible house #1 oscillates between monolithic and wide-open.

In wide-open mode the convertible house #1 changes into a open floorplan with a collective patio. This patio offers open-air qualities and can be covered with parasols.

O Novo Salão Metropolitano

Type: Urban Waterfront Scope: Competition Entry Location: Porto/P Client: Porto Vivo, SRU Collaborator: metris architekten Team: Stefan Werrer, Thorsten Erl, Andreas Bartels Size: 54 ha Period: Sep - Oct 2007 Status: finished

From harbour to parlour

The geomorphology of the site named the city of Oporto. The city in turn gave its name to its best known trage good - the port wine (Vinho do Porto). With the wine emerged a symbiotic relation between the cities Villa Nova da Gaia and Oporto. Today Oporto represents a metroplitan region, the Grande Area Metropolitana do Porto (G.A.M.P.), which competes in the globalised contest of city regions.

In this regard the Douro Valley is considered as one space to be formulated. The design area contains three zones for interventions. The central zone covers the touristic sites between Alfandega and Ponte Dom Luis on both shores. The areas of Massarelos to the west and Fontainhas to the east are enhanced with small interventions on the scale of the neighbourhoods.

The main focus of creating a new Waterfront is put in the central zone with design proposals for new public spaces and urban program. The Salão, ital. Salone was always regarded as a reception or assembly room. It is a high quality public space furnished with a melange of old and new buildings and well connected with a new bridge to an urban loop for strolling.

With the demolition of the large structured health institutes the development towards a living city gaines a momentum. Living at the edge between Park and city center becomes very attractive.

The construction of 200 housing units is an important contribution to stabilising the number of inhabitants. Thereby existing infrastructure is used to the full capacity and sustainability. Together with the rearrangement of the areas Schlossplatz, Hofgarten, Parkstrasse und Safranmoos this opens up a new perspective for Aulendorf.

A variation in typology, program, new development and retrofit are encouraging city life, social mix and integration. The new edge corresponds to the dense wood structure of the Park. The new development areas will shape the experience of a spacious Park as the central open space in the living city Aulendorf.

Paradise Included

Type: Open Space Strategy Scope: Competition Entry Location: Almere/NL Client: Ymere Housing Corporation Collaborator: MBA/S Team: Stefan Werrer, Matthias Bauer, Biljana Vojinovic, Bratislav Brankovic Size: 250.000 sqm Period: Apr - May 2005 Status: Ymere Award 2005, shortlisted

The competition brief challenged contestants to develop a vision regarding the arrangement of a (suburban) landscape in a new type of public green space: the Stadstuinen or Town Gardens in Almere Hout. The Stadstuinen accommodate some 100 archaeological sites. In this set-up, these sites are protected and assigned a (recreational) function.

Paradise included offers an open space concept that reflects on activities and events of the earlier periods. It connects the contemporary nature of the Stadstuinen with the historical landscape.

Paradise included offers a process of implementation with phases that can serve multiple purposes. To advertise, structure and complement the process of urban development the stadstuinen create a spatial framework within low-density areas. The combination of differentiated milieus with additional meaningful spaces has a high potential to establish addresses of neighbourhood identities. A touristic infrastructure with attractions both on the level of a large network and on the level of single highly interesting places is part of a physical framework for orientation and future development as an alternative to the system of traffic infrastructure.

Paradise included envisions a programming of the gardens that is reflecting the past as an inspiration for future activities and events. The idea of transscripts Æ dutch words in present perfect that describe and provoke activities. The transscripts appear imprinted on the inside and outside of the perimeter walls and appeal to the imagination of the users.
